CLINICAL STUDY OF THROMBOANGIITIS OBLITERANS



Abstract
Throemboangiitis obliterans is the most common peripheral vacular diease in Korea, whereas arteriosclerosis is in the western countries. This report is a review of our experience of 73 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans at Kwang Ju Christian Hospital during the seven years between January 1963 and December 1969.
The purpose of this paper is to present more detailed observation of these cases. The results are as follows;
1. The incidence of thromboangiitis obliterans was one patient to 740 patients in the general out patient clinic. All patients of throboangiitis obliterans were heavy smokers.
2. Thromboangiitis obliterans may be seen in any age group, however it affects more often young men (93.1%) between 20 years and 40 years of age.
3. Occupation prior to disease was mostly farmer (67%).
4. The most common symptoms and signs were coldness and burning and color changes of the affected extremities.
5. The most common cxtremities affected at the time of diagnosis were both lower extremities (49%).
6. The time from appearance of first symptoms to diagnosis was between one and three years.
7. The tibial artery was the most commonly involved peripheral artery.
8. The main type of treatment was sympathectomy (71 cases). Of course it was most important to recommend cessation of smoking.
9. The effectfiveness of sympathectomy was 64.7% acceptable result. The majority of those patients stoped smoking with early diagnosis, treatment was more effective.
